WASHINGTON, D.C.—“The politicians, and you’re going to hear a lot of this with the upcoming election. They’re going to tell you that 43 million people in the United States are uninsured…The real numbers are a little bit different…you go to www.coverageforall.org would be the easiest…

You take that 43 million people that are supposedly uninsured. You’ll find it breaks down into 14 million people that are eligible for already existing public programs but they’re not enrolled…because of the hassles, they’re not aware of it etcetera…

Then there are the people who have an income of $54,000 and up who can afford health insurance but they don’t think they can, there are cultural issues, small employers, transitions, etcetera…

So the real crisis runs around 9 million people in America. And when you see people trying to push for single-payer plans telling you there’s 43 million people in America that are uninsured, the truth is it’s more like 9 million. And we’ve talked before about ideas and ways to go about that…

And they’re saying that the California figure by the way, breaks down similarly. Of the 6.17 million classified as uninsured in California, 2.97 million are eligible for public insurance benefits but are not yet enrolled. An additional 2.1 have annual household incomes of more than $50,000 a year. And roughly two thirds of a million are temporarily uninsured primarily due to changes in employment…

That leaves about 900,000 people who are characterized as truly uninsured…(California)

And by the way, they have a great chart there… If you’re confused about health insurance, it’s right across the top, all the different types and kinds, the pros and cons of all, very useful. So that’s www.coverageforall.org…
